The ex-wife can file a claim against the ex-husband's estate for the $6,000.00

Yes, but don't delay. Ex-wife should file a notice of claim against her ex-husband's estate, assuming the estate has been probated. If it has not, you will have some additional work to do. My recommendation is that the ex-wife retain counsel to assist.

find out who the executor or administrator. you can do this by searching the probate records in the county in which he resided. There is a one year mini-statute of limitation
