Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

when my father's mother died her diamond rings were left to me her granddaughter. When my parents divorced my dad gave the rings to me, I was 13 years old. My dad left and my mother took the rings away from me. When I was 15 the courts found my mother to be an unfit mother and I went to live with her brother. Over the years I have asked many times for my rings and was always told no. At some point the story changed to she never had them, and my cousin stole them. She is now 70 and I am 50 she had to go to a nursing home for a short stay. I had to go to her house to get her clothes and in her drawer I found my fathers mothers rings, that were left to me when she died. My mother denies they are my father's mothers rings and insist they are her own mothers rings. They are not, in fact they are 3 sizes smaller than her mothers wedding band. Her mother married in the late 60's and her diamond wasn't real. the rings I found are classic 1930's 1940's. My father is possitive they are his mothers rings, because of a prong that needed to be replaced. I have the rings but my mother says if I don't bring them back she will have me arrested. I do not want to be arrested. Is there any way the rings can be kept in protective care while this is straightened out. If I give the rings back I will never see them again. My mother is a very vindictive person. Is there anyway that I can regain what was taken from me? the rings are rightful mine, and I would like to have them since my grandmother wanted me to have them. thank you for your time.
