Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

If heir to estate dies during probate period

John Doe is married and has children. A will states that the estate will go to John Doe, and if he is no longer living, to his children. John Doe receives a copy of the will. The will enters probate. During this period, before distribution of assets is made, John Doe dies. What happens to his inheritance? Does it go into his estate, (to his wife), or does it go to his children? At what point in the process does the money actually become his...at the time of death of the person whose will is in queston, or at the time the inheritance is actually paid out?

The assetts will flow through John Doe's estate. His hiers will inherit from estate #1.
