Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

legal fee dispute 2

I've been working with a paralegal

assigned to me through an attorney's

office to get authorized as executrix of

my grandmother's estate. She

originally quoted me $1000, but the

final bill is $3000. Is she allowed to

charge more than she quoted, and if

not, what can I do since it was a

verbal quote?

Re: legal fee dispute 2

It sounds like the paralegal is working under the direction of a lawyer. Your dispute is with the lawyer not the paralegal. Hopefully, the fee agreement is in writing and spells out the nature of the fee: hourly, flat fee, or some other basis. In addition to the requirements of the fee agreement, the fee must be reasonable under all circumstances. As you indicate a verbal quote, you need to examine the bill to determine the nature of the billing and the work done. You should have received periodic billings.

There is not enough information.

As a first matter, this seems somewhat high just for the appointment alone without any other work; unless there are complications which existed.

I would suggest that you contact the attorney, and discuss this.
