I would need to know the date of the check and what it is for.

If it is a check for something you both own as joint tenants, then I think you have one of two choices:

1. Return the check to the party issuing it with a copy of your wife's death certificate and ask that they re-issue the check in your name as being the owner or 2. open your wife's estate and have the Executor, sign the check over to you.
