Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

A will has gone to probate and an executrix has been named. There is a small amount of money being "given" away through the will. Some named people in the will get only $1.00 whereas other will get various amounts. We are told that people receiving money will have to wait up to a year. Is this correct and why?
