Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Michigan

Re: filing bankrupcy for my grandmother

I'm thinking about filing bankruptcy for my grandmother. I took over POT for her a little over a yr ago. At that time she had 40,000 in collections. She has 8,000 in a checking account plus her little S.S (781.00) that she gets monthly. If we did a bankruptcy will anyone take the 8,000 she does have to live on? She lives in senior apts and has no other assets.

She should be fine to keep what she has and receive a discharge of the debt. The only issue would be whether she continued to accrue debt knowing that she couldn't pay.

If she has no other property (including household items) that needs to be claimed exempt, the money in her checking account should be okay. I would be happy to speak with you about helping her file bankruptcy and answer any questions you may have.
