Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Michigan
If a person is in an active Chapter 13 bankruptcy can they co-sign for their child's auto loan (greater than $1,000) without getting permission from the trustee?

No your chapter 13 plan contains a direction that you should not incur a debt for more than $1000 without the court's prior permission for pre- 2014 plans and $2000 for post 1/1/2014 plans. Permission should however not be a problem usually as the student loans should not become due until after your plan is completed.
