clothing design idea
If I have a new idea for clothing do I need a patent or just proof that I came up with the idea and start contacting manufacturers?

You need to have your design or idea in writing, as you can't patent an "idea." You would get in touch with a lawyer who specializes in this area and he can point you in the right direction or tell you what you need to do. You'd definitely want to do this before showing others your idea, or starting to manufacture or sell without it being protected.
