Legal Question in Business Law in Michigan

Copyright, royalties and care custody and control

I convert home video's to DVD,VCD or VHS. With some editing if required. I also will add music. If the client supplies the music do I need to worry about royalties or copyrights? And do I need some kind of wording when they give me their footage that explains this and that I'm not responsible if something happens to their footage?

Re: Copyright, royalties and care custody and control

You definitely need to worry about copyrights, because YOU'RE the one making the copies and you're doing it for profit.

Certainly someone could do his own movie and add music that he purchased without a problem, but when you're doing it commercially, you should be careful.

If this is a major part of your business, I strongly suggest hiring an attorney who specializes in copyright or hiring/asking Wayne State Univ. Professor Jessica Litman, who is an expert on the topic to help you sort through it. It shouldn't cost more than a few hours time to get your answer, a few hundred bucks at most.
