Legal Question in Business Law in Michigan
can you be forbidden to tape employment reviews?
I have a coworker who is being fired from her position for very random reasons. (e.g. according to the bosses she ''works too hard'') In order to protect herself, she asked her bosses if she could bring a tape recorder into her employee performance review to document what was said. The bosses said no, and that brings me to my question: can an employer legally forbid an employee to tape record a meeting that concerns that person's future with the company?

Re: can you be forbidden to tape employment reviews?
The employer could refuse to talk in the presence of a tape recorded and there is nothing illegal about that; but, likewise, there is no Michigan law preventing your friend from taping the conversation without the employer's knowledge. This remains true so long as your friend is a participant in the conversation - so she cannot just leave a tape recorder in the room or use an eavesdropping device, she has to be part of the conversation.
