Legal Question in Business Law in Michigan
Un-notified termination of Insurance Benefits
I was terminated from my employment with a large bank in the middle of May. I recieved no notice of termination of benefits, nor did I recieve a COBRA letter, from said employer. I went to pick up a prescription refill from the drug store yesterday and was told that my insurance was expired and that I would have to pay $140.99 for the medication. I payed it, due to the fact that it is a required medication that cannot be stopped suddenly. Was it illegal for them to term benefits without notification? If so, how do I go about persuing a lawsuit (and would it be worth my time)?

Re: Un-notified termination of Insurance Benefits
You were entitled to a COBRA letter within a certain period of time after termination. Follow up with the company insurance benefits manager, and get them to reimburse you any money due.
You had the right to continue your insurance if you paid for it, and the notification scheme is designed to give you plenty of time to make up your mind. See if, perhaps, they mailed it to the wrong address or there might have been another reason you didn't receive it. In any event, follow up on it with the company, because it was their responsibility to get that notice to you.
