Legal Question in Business Law in Michigan

witholding paycheck to play games

I was one day late turning in time sheets, which normally does not get boss upset. But I had to change the way I did it and turned it in. I then got it back and was told there were missing hours, so I filled in the hours with admin access, it took me a long time because I kept getting called away, then I was told I cant do it so I explained it again and turned it in. Now it is being with held to show why it is important to turn them in on time. Someone did sit on them 2 days between getting them back the first time.

Re: witholding paycheck to play games

GENERALLY SPEAKING it is not lawful to withhold a person’s paycheck based upon the situation you describe.

However...you should keep in mind that unless you have an employment contract (or are part of a collective bargaining agreement or union) you are likely an "at will" employee. As such, the company can fire you for just about any reason (or with no reason at all) so long as they do not violate Title VII or the Elliott-Larson Civil Rights Act.

So while you might TECHNICALLY be correct about withholding your check....you might also be buying yourself trouble on another front.
