Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

Can I have this cat neutered? And taken care of by me?

We have had a little juvenile kitty coming into the yard for the past few months chasing squirrels and birds.

At first I thought he was a stray - felt sorry for him because it was cold - gave him outside shelter and some food.

Decided to put a collar on him with a note - IF THIS IS YOUR CAT, PLEASE CALL ME. I got a call from a neighbor down the street (this is a mobile home park). She said he was her cat and that he ''was well loved.''

I can't get rid of him. The past month or so has been bitterly cold and he is out all the time. I feel sorry for him. I contacted a NO KILL society and they indicated they would pay the vet bills if I decided to keep him.

Now - I really don't want him - but his life is in grave danger. And I agreed. BUT, do the current owners have any real rights - can they sue me if I do this? Do I have any rights to make this decision even though he is outside in subzero weather and fending for himself all day long.

I'm in such a dilemma over this. On the one hand I want to save his life (and prevent tons of new offspring of his in the park) and on the other, I don't know if I have a legal right to have him ''fixed'' and given shots.

Can you help? Thanks so much

Offer to buy him. I bet it wouldn't take much.
