Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

common usage of name

Hi,

I have a problem with the spelling of my name. My passport has the spelling Sarah but I have always used the spelling Sara.

When applying for a drivers license the DMV said they have to use the spelling on my passport.

The problem is : My social security number, my childrens birth certificates, credit history, credit cards , certificates and diplomas..everything has the spelling Sara.

Is there any argument I can use with the DMV to make them allow me to use my common usage name?

I showed them my social security number, Old Indiana drivers license, even my foreign drivers license which all carry the spelling Sara but they were adamant that they could only use the spelling on the passport as that was a primary document.

Re: common usage of name

you would to do an official name change petition in the Circuit Court. This included fingerprinting and a criminal background check. Fairly straightforward. Check out my website at www.kliszlaw.com or contact me for further information. Tim Klisz.
