Can a company legally deny a person employment because they smoke cigerettes even if smoking is probited on their property already?

I don't see why a company can't decide to accommodate the wishes of present employees or save the health related costs related to smoking. Personally, I have found that obverall, smokers are less productive because all they care about is their next fix.
