Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

is discrimination in bars illegal?

i work in a local nightclub, where we have a very strict dresscode designed to keep out a certain would-be clientele. it is as follows: no athletic shoes, no jerseys, no neck chains on men, no sweats, no warmups, no hats, no workboots (implemented recently to keep out timberland boots), etc...

i recently spoke my mind about this one night after work, and i feel i may lose my job over it. is there anything i can do about this?

Re: is discrimination in bars illegal?

Discrimination is illegal based upon race, religion, color, creed, national origin or sex. Therefore, if you feel the discrimination is designed to limited the number of Black patrons, it would be protected by the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act in Michigan. However, in order for you to have protection, you will most likely have to make a complaint to the State or Federal Civil Rights Commission. Then, if you were fired after the employer received notice of the complaint, you could arguably be protected by the Whistleblowers Act. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
