Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

Discrimination against a particular group.

Athletes in many schools are held to a different standard than other students. Athletes are responsible 365 days per year anywhere. If they break a law they are punished by the law and then loose athleteic priviliges as well. Is this discrimination against a particular group? Since students in general are responsible only on school grounds.

Re: Discrimination against a particular group.

"Discrimination" means treating one group diferently than another. Not all discrimination is illegal. It is legal, for example, for an athletic team to "discriminate" in favor of people with more talent.

Discrimination is illegal if it is based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age or disability or, in Michigan, on weight or marital status.

There is no law that prohibits discrimination against athletes.

Generally, participation in athletics is a privledge, not a right. Schools generally may deny that privledge to those who do not represent the school well by breaking the law.
