Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan
Law Firm Legality
I worked at a Law Firm as a
marketer. I was fired out of no
where, out of the blue and this put
me in an outrage so I deleted the
folder that contained all of my work
that I had done for the company and
left. My boss emailed me saying that
what i did was illegal? Is this true?
They have a back up disk every
friday, it's not like they can't get it
back. They also made me create a
yahoo account for a work email.
Right before I was fired, my boss
made me give her my email
password and when I left the office
she changed my password. Is that
legal? Isn't that an invasion of
privacy? They won't tell me what
they changed my password to either.

as to the deletion, I agree with you this should not be an issue. They can easily retrieve your work, which they own. As to the e-mail account, you gave it to them, and they took it over. You would have been better off keeping it and letting them come after you. Once you voluntarily gave it up, I dont think you still have a right to it. A judge could disagree. You're fortunate that you were not prosecuted. The firm paid you for that work and it was theirs - not yours. The fact that it was backed up is irrelevant.
You have no right of privacy when you utilize the firm's equipment.
Raising this issue in court is a sure way of continuing your unemployment.
