Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan
Medical Privacy
Can an employer keep medical information in an employee's personnel file? The office where I work requires a doctor's slip for sick time and the slip (which usually shows the physician's specific area of medical practice, i.e., internal medicine, oncology, psychiatry) is attached to a request for time off and then placed in our personnel files. The personnel file is available to any administrative personnel with access and they are then privy to private medical information and the treatment sought. Thank you very much for your assistance. I am most appreciative.

You may be able to object under the new HIPPA laws. Employers are especially paranoid about violating HIPPA. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
