Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

What qualifies as slander?

I would like to know what qualifies as slander. An individual is posting rumors on the internet about myself and the father of my child...stating that someone else is the father, creating chat rooms and such with this as the topic. I would like to know if this qualifies as slander or not. I have the topic and such saved to my computer as some form of evidence. Thank you for your help.

Re: What qualifies as slander?

Spoken words are slander; written words constitute libel, when they are maliciously spoken with the intent to cause harm or emotional injury. Truth is always a complete defense to a charge of libel. Proof is difficult; often only token damages are awarded in cases such as you describe. Consult a personal injury attorney in your town for specific legal opinions concerning your case. Initial consultation/case evaluation is usually done at no cost - ask first.
