Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

Refused Entry

I went to a bar, and they completely denied my entry. I am 21 years of age, and was not intoxicated. I had been arrested 3 weeks prior and the sheriff's department punched a hole in my driver's license. They also gave me a piece of paper stating that it is still legal for me to drive. I handed my driver's license and paperwork to the doorman, and he still refused to let me in, saying it was not a valid piece of identification. I then showed him another picture id. He still refused. Next, I asked if a birth certificate would be valid, and he said no. Then, he went to the bar next door and told them to refuse my entry as well. I am very frustrated at this point and would really appreciate any advice I could get. Thanks for your time.

Re: Refused Entry

First, keep in mind that your problem is not Earth shattering. In the big scheme of things, you couldn't get into a bar. As long as the bar did not discriminate against you on the basis of your race, religion, color, creed, national origin or sexual orientation, there is probably not much you can do, other than complain tot he Liquor Control Commission that the bar is failing to let the public in without discrimination. My guess is that the bar knew you had a drinking while driving case pending and they wanted to protect themselves from potential liability if you drank in the bar and then had an accident. William S.
