Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Michigan

Vehicle Damage On Private Property

Is the property owner liable for a vehicle damaged parked in their lot?

My vehicle parked at work (parking lot located across the street owned by employer) was broken into. There was some damage and lost items. This type of thing has happened numerous times at said employers parking lot(s) over the last few years.

There is no secrity other than a ''bluff'' sign reading ''These premisses are monitored by security cameras''.

My employer says I'm on my own.

Thanks

Re: Vehicle Damage On Private Property

Your employer is not correct. When you leave your car in the care of a parking lot, it is the duty of the owner of the lot to take reasonable care of the vehicle. This is, of course, more recognized when it is a commercial transaction. Are you paying for your spot in the lot? If so, yoiu are in a better position to enforce the duty of the bailee.
