In order to manage its legislative workload more efficiently, both branches of congress are divided into committees. These committees handle various aspects that require research and possibly legislation, should conditions warrant. Examples of committees are the ways and means committee, the armed services committee, and the intelligence committee. Representatives and senators are assigned to various committees and sort of become specialized in these areas. Within each committee, there are then further subdivisions called subcommittees, and these subcommittees delve into issues that are even more specialized than the committees themselves.
