Legal Question in Consumer Law in Michigan
Fraud
My brothers son used his SS# without permission. He ran up a cell phone bill two years ago. My brother is now being held responsible for this bill. What do we do?? The collection agency has made my brother lose his cell phone and now wants $750 to pay this bill.

Re: Fraud
#1) Make a police report with your local police agency and get a police report number
#2) Make a report with the fraud/security department for the cell phone company and give them the police report number
#3) Contact all three credit bureaus and consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports. Goto the Federal Trade Commission website and look for their online brochure on identity fraud.
#4) You could probably sue the person who is illegally using the social security number. You would have to consider whether the person has the finances to be worth suing.
Good luck.
