limitations on debt collection

i have been sent a bill from a phone company for a charge they claim i owe from 1999...it is only $33, but aren't there time limits for collection of debt?

I highly doubt that you are responsible for a debt that old. The statute of limitations is six years. I would send them a letter telling them you dispute the debt and ask for proof that you owe the debt. This could very well be another creditor scam, because they think people won't fight them for $33. I think you should

If the debt is legitimate, you are obligated under the terms of the contract to pay it.

Even with a statute of limitations, there are exceptions if they couldn't find you and made good faith efforts to track you down.

They might be willing to negotiate with you about the amount, but if the debt is valid, expect to have to pay it.
