Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

bad check from 1996

A company just contacted me about a supposed bad check from May of 1996. The check is for $54. The company went bankrupt that they say the check is wrote to years ago. They tell me they are taking me to court for $902 and will put me into the database for bad checks. I know the criminal statute of limitations is 6 years.

Can they stop me from using my checking account and put me into CheckSystems for an 11 year old check? I would rather go in front of the judge than pay these guys, they don't sound legitimate. What would you suggest??

Re: bad check from 1996

They cannot do what they are threatening and to threaten you in such a manner is illegal according to the Federal and Michigan Fair Debt Collection Practices Acts. I will be happy to write a letter on your behalf for a modest fee, or better yet, to sue on your behalf as attorney fees are provided for in those statutes.
