Can my bank lawfully charge me a late fee on a payment that wasn't the minimum required payment even when it was ten days early?

They likely made a mistake if your payment was made outside of the normal billing cycle. Send them a letter informing them how you simply made your payment early, and request to have the late fee reversed, and they will do it.

Call up the credit card company or bank and find out how they rationalize it and dispute it. If they refuse to change it, dispute it again in writing.
