Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
Billed for health service of two years ago
Back in 2000-2001, I saw a psychologist for counseling. At each session, I paid $45.00, which is what the psychologist told me to pay. I stopped seeing her back in 2001. I never heard anything from her, or the counseling group's office after my last appointment which was on April 24, 2001. Yesterday, to my surprise, I received a statement from the psychologist stating that I owed $152.50 and that the amount was past due. (This was indicated by large printed letters scrawled in ink ''Past Due!!'') I never received any bills from her, was never called by her office or notified in any way that I owed any amount of money - until I received this statement. Are people allowed to suddenly crawl out of the woodwork with no prior notice and demand money? As I said, at the end of every session, she requested a check for $45.00, which I always gave her. What should I do about this?
Thank you.

Ask her in writing for an itemized list of every meeting, and the payments you gave her. Then compare that to your notes, and if she has asked for payment for services she didn't provide, tell her so and don't pay. Otherwise, pay.
