Charged $320.00 for a lost video rental

I lost a dvd video I rented from a local video store and now they sent me to collections for $320.00 over a movie. Can they legally do this? Can't I just buy them the replacement movie?

I doubt that any court would find $320 legal. However, you will likely need to bring the case into the court system or they would.

You could alternatively have an attorney write a letter on your behalf. By law you if the debt appears on your credit report you may add a statement explaining the account.
