Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Charging Employee for Customer Debts

My daughter is a beautician. Her employer told her that because he has several thousand dollars in charges that the customers are not paying he was going to require the employees to pay it. He has charged each employee in excess of $250 for this. My daughter told him that she would not pay him. His response was then he would sue her and garnishee her check. The biggest problem is that when these charges occurred she was only the receptionist. Can he legally do this?

Re: Charging Employee for Customer Debts

No. Tell him to go ahead and he will be responsible for her attorney fees in defending the case. If he then fires her, she could sue him for retaliatory discharge.

Typically, an employer cannot make employees pay for his losses.
