Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

civil court

I'm asking this question for a friend we will call her Mary, who is being taken to civil court about an unpaid debt. I don't know all the particulars but I do know she has been paying her bill consistantly from them for years, my question is what can she do to find out about getting this debt knocked down to a manageable amount or completely zeroed out? I don't want to see her file for bankruptcy.
