Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Collection Agency

Furniture company called me and said I co-signed for a loan on furniture in 1993 for my ex-wife and that I owed them 720.00. Said they were sending me to a collection agency and that they were going to garnishee my wages.

Asked them why it took them so long to contact me and they told me it took them 17 years to find me. They said they had my signature and S.S. # (they do have the right number) I told them I did not sign for a loan and that would have to send me proof. They hung up on me. I have good credit, can they do damage to my credit for something I didn't sign for? Or Garnishee my wages? What recourse do I have?

Re: Collection Agency

A creditor cannot collect on a debt after 6 years after the debt was incurred or the last payment made on the account. If this company attempts further collection, tell them the statute of limitations has expired. Further, they cannot report it to the credit reporting agencies as a negative item for more than 7 years.
