Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
Collection Fees
I had a past due cell phone bill from an account that I closed. My contract had expired 2 years earlier and I just kept with the plan until the phone died. I recently paid the past due amount directly to the cell phone company and am now getting calls from a collection agency to pay 18% of the bill to them for a collection fee. I did not know, nor was I notified that the account had gone to a collection agency. Do I have to pay this fee?

Re: Collection Fees
No. You have no obligation to the collection agency. If they want their cut, they should look to the cell phone company.
