Is it legal for companies to call neighbors and relatives trying to collect a debt, or just to give you information?

Debt collectors are required to abide by comsumer protection laws or may face penalties for failure to do so. Collectors may communicate with third parties to ascertain location information for a debtor but are prohibited from revealing or discussing the debt.
