Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
daughter received threatening law suit notice
amount is 2x's owed, never received notices from anyone except this one. law firm claims account was sent to 3 collection agencies and no payments were made since 9-2005. untrue, daughter has cancelled checks. credit card company can not locate her account number? why? we can dispute debt, but that does not stop the law firm from filing judgement, we can countersue but that wont stop judgement either. if she pays for attorney, cost will be more than the debt by the time it is done...what to do?

Re: daughter received threatening law suit notice
You asked about a debt collection issue.
Bring the matter to an attorney and have him/her evaluate the matter. Keep accurate records of all contacts.
Debt collection is handled under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Best part about this law is that legal fees and costs are usually awarded to the consumer, when requested, as part of the award. Read the text of the law online.
