Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
hospital bills
I have a hospital bill from january 2008 for my son it is only listed in my boyfriends name for some reason but i have made a payment of 200 dollars and then send a payment for 10 dollars the remaining balance is 500 dollars if i keep sending in payments of what i can afford can it effect my credit report? they have turned it over to collections but keep getting bills from the hospital and the hospital is cashing my checks i send the collectio agency said the bill has to be paid in full or they will take further action. If i am making effort to pay how can they do that?

Re: hospital bills
If the bill was not already in collections, I'd be inclined to say that it cannot really hurt your credit, however, the collection agency is going to report whatever your current status is to the credit reporting agency, so yes, it can hurt your credit. Making an effort to pay isn't a defense against being collected against, but you might be able to convince the collection agency that they aren't going to benefit from spending money in court to collect against you when you are paying them as much as you can. If they think they would get paid faster by garnishing your wages though, they might be inclined to get a judgment against you.
