Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Marriage

Want to marry girlfriend. I am in debt. If she agrees to marry me will she become financially responsible for debts that I created before we married? If so, is there anyway around that?

Re: Marriage

What you can do is sit down with your girlfriend and explain your financial situations, separate and together.

Then, figure out how to make the debt go away so that you can move on in life together.

She doesn't become automatically liable vis-avis a third party, but REALISTICALLY it will have an indirect impact upon your common life regardless of who has to pay the debt.

One thing you can do is agree to a set of common expenses, and then give each one a budget to pay former debts. That way, it's all out on the table, you have a plan and from then on, you can decide on an even basis to share and share alike.

OR,

she can get an equal allowance of debt and the two of you can share in repayment from day 1.

Lots of options, it's up to the two of you. A prenup isn't going to do much better than that, really.
