Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Medical bills for children over 18

My daughter is 19, works and attends college. Because she is a student, I am able to keep my health insurance on her.

Recently, she missed two appointments with a counselor, which resulted in two $50 charges. My insurance does not pay for missed appointments. Am I still responsible for this bill even though she is over 18 or is she legally responsible for it?

Re: Medical bills for children over 18

At the counselor's office, your daughter would have filled out insurance information. That sheet of paper usually has a section to list a "responsible party. Whomever she listed in that section is who will be billed. If you do not wish to be responsible for her bills, make sure the counselor's office removes you as the responsible party. You could ask your daughter to reimburse you for the bills. If she did not, however, your alternative would be to sue her. I certainly would not recommend you sue her though, since that would be very drastic for $100, and would obviously not foster a good family relationship.

Good luck :)
