Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

medical bills

52 yr. old self employed carpenter. heart attack 9/4/07. no health insurance. no real property. no assets other than tools and equipment of trade. $52,000 medical bills, $15,000 credit card bills. barely able to pay costs of living and buy food. work in MI very slow. tried for social security, but not really disabled, and don't want to fraud the government. don't want bankruptcy for fear of losing all my tools that i worked my whole life for. do i do nothing and wait to be sued? have numerous bills from hospitals, cat labs, ambulances, heart surgeons, etc. can't even afford to send all of them a small monthly payment. please advise. i fear that time is running out for me. thank you. It is probable that your tools will fall under the exemptions allowing you to keep assets, especially if you do not have equity in a home.

Many hospitals have programs for persons who are indigent. Furthermore, consider writing to the hospital and credit card companies a letter which is signed and dated indicating that you are filing for bankruptcy. See how they respond.
