Merchant Laws in Michigan

I work for Borders Book store as a cashier. When I ask for Photo Id for Credit card purchases I am told it is against the law to do this why?

I am only looking for comparative signatures.

It is not against the law to check photo identification. It might be a privacy violation to write down the drivers' license number or otherwise maintain some electronic record of the drivers' license number.
