Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

cannot pay hospital bill

I am 22 and I have many payments to make other than this hospital bill. I can pay small amounts each week but they want me to pay $100-$150 a week. One week that left me with $30 for food and gas for the rest of that week. I don't even have a place to call home right now. I am staying with my girlfriend and her parents for a while becuase they are the only ones who will take me in. I am trying to get my own place and my car back on the road and the way it seems they are going to cause me to go into bankrupcy before the age of 23. Is there any way I may pay small amounts each week as long as i pay each week? or Do I have to file bankrupcy?

Re: cannot pay hospital bill

Why are you paying that amount? That may be an amount appropriate to pay each month, not each week. You may be able to negotiate a lower amount. However, they may still sue you and get a judgment. Even if they get a judgment and your wages are garnished, they would get 25% of your disposable income (gross minus taxes) which, I would guess, is far less than you are paying right now. You did not say how much you owed on this medical bill, but bankruptcy may be an excellent option for you. In addition to bankruptcy, my firm does a great deal of debt negotiation for clients, and we may be able to assist you with other options. For more informtion, call me at (248) 679-1552.
