Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

Responsibility of Spouse

Two years ago my husband signed an IOU, or legal agreement with his ex-wife to pay her $13,000 at $600 a month. He has

not been able to keep these payments up to date and she is

threatening to sue him and ME. I had no idea this agreement

had taken place. It is money he owes her and her father from

when he was still married to her. Am I responsible for this

debt because I am married to him now. We have been married

for almost 4 years and I just found out about this. Needless

to say, I am very upset.

Thank you.

Re: Responsibility of Spouse

Probably not. However, if suit is filed and a judgment is entered against your husband, any joint property or accounts owned by the two of you may be subject to attachment or garnishment.

You should have an attorney read the agreement and review your assets for a more complete answer to your question.
