Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

I'm trying to settle an account with a dishonest misleading collection agency.

I have an account that has gone from $5900 to $12000 in the past couple years. I am willing to settle, and I was offered a 3500 settlement but the collection agency did not provide me with any proof this account was mine. I did some research myself and found some of the info I needed. Then I received another call from the collector (different agent) he said I need to settle now for $9500. And that there never was a $3500 offer. I spoke with his boss, she confirmed the I did in fact have a $3500 offer but it expired at the end of July. Her employee denied the $3500 offer on July 28th. I recorded my conversations with the supervisor and the subordinate. My issue is I was willing to settle the account but was not given any info I requested, I finally obtain some of the info on my own, but now because I was lied to its stands to cost me over $6000. Is this legal? and if so, is the amount of interest legal?

Depending on your credit history, it might be worth it from a financial standpoint to file for bankruptcy and discharge that amount in full. I doubt you could enforce the $3500 settlement offer.
