The Federal and Michigan Fair Debt Collection Practices Acts prevent creditors from doing certain acts. It sounds like your creditors have violated the Acts. Furthermore, it would take a court order to pick up tools if you dispute their right to pick them up.

If you have further questions, please visit my website at www.lawrefs.com and search under the consumer law heading for relevant information on what creditors can and cannot do.
