Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

statue of limitation

I recieved a notice of garnishment from a law firm on a debt that occured in 1985; I attempted to resolve this debt by returning part of the student loan I had recieved from the Government. I asked the school to return the monies they had recieved, because I didn't attend. I never heard from anyone until now. Am I still liable? What steps should I take now, to prevent this garnishment?

Re: statue of limitation

Though it may be futile, you can attempt to negotiate a settlement to pay that law firm. Another option is to contact a debt restructuring counselor, although their fees can sometimes be exhorbitant. Why not just pay what you owe? If you are unable to do this in the near or distant future, bankruptcy may be an option. - Jesse Sweeney (248) 569-1900
