Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

I am being sued by a creditor and received a summons. The summons states that I need to file a written response to the court. What do I need to do with the court? Do I send them a letter or do I need to go to the a present the letter? Also, I started paying the creditor about 4 months ago and they did not send the payment back, so how can they sue me?
