Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan
I'm being sued...
I was just issued a summons and complaint due to an outstanding medical bill totaling $1736.02. I have never been sued before, and am uncertain of what I need to do. I live alone and am a full time student and work full time. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck and I'm worried about sinking further into debt. I would like to avoid going to court, but do not know if this is even a possiblity. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions regarding any options which may assist me in this matter. Thank-You.

Hi there - it would be a shame to file bankruptcy over just one bill of that size, but it does sound as though your income to expenses ratio is near the breaking point. First I'd see if I could find a relative who could help. Then I would recommend trying to settle with the company for, say, half as much and agree to make small payments. Call up the attorney and make a low offer. Try to keep the ball rolling. If, on the other hand, you have more than just that debt, bankruptcy may be an option.
