time limit on 20 + year old debt

i was divorced some time ago since i have made every effort to pay all collections owed by me. last week i recieved a statement from a collection company called asset acceptance llc. aafter calling the number enclosed the person from the agency stated it was a bill from a chase account dating 1986

i have never been contacted by anybody in the past regarding this bill.and after trying to remember back over 20 years i can honestly say i have never had any account with chase. what do you suggest on this matter?

Re: time limit on 20 + year old debt

I suggest that you make them prove the debt. It may be that the statute of limitations has expired (6 years in Michigan). If you have not used such an account or made a payment in six years, they cannot collect. You should also check your credit report. You can get a free credit report annually from the 3 credit report agencies by logging onto www.annualcreditreport.com or by writing to them.

I can assist you if it is on your credit report and they won't take it off or if they continue collection.
