Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

A truck bought for me

I had my mother in law help me buy a vehicle worth $4,000. I signed all the paperwork from the dealership, all she did was provide a check for the full amount. Since I signed all the paperwork the vehicle is in my name.we had a verbal agreement that I would make a payment of however much I could afford, when I could afford it. I had paid a $100 a month until April of 2007, totalling an amount of $500. In July of 2007 her husband broke a computer desk of my wife's, and agreed to take the value of the desk which was $500 off my bill at a rate of $100 a month for 5 months, starting from May of 2007. It is now October 2nd and that $500 for the desk is up, and they are demanding that I start paying them $200 a month until my vehicle is paid off. I do not have any reciepts because I figured she was my mother in law and that I could trust her. She is also threatening that if I don't giver her the $200 by Friday October 5th she will take me to court. I am just now getting back on my feet but I can't afford to pay her $200 a month and she won't let me pay any less. What am I able to do?

Re: A truck bought for me

You have a contract with your MIL and since it is not in writing, the courts would likely look at your past conduct to infer the terms of the contract. Since you have paid $100 per month, it is likely that the courts would enforce the $100 per month amount. Ordinarily the courts would not allow a party to arbitrarily modify the terms of a contract.
